REPUBLICAN 2008: McCain finishes fifth in Illinois straw poll; Romney wins

Arizona Sen. John McCain finished a disappointing fifth in a straw poll held Thursday by Illinois Republicans for the 2008 presidential nomination.Former Massachusetts governor Mitt Romney won the straw poll, with 40 percent of the votes cast by Republicans showing up at the event. Actor and former Sen. Fred Thompson placed second. U.S. Rep. Ron Paul, R-Texas, was third, and former New York Mayor Rudy Giuliani was fourth.Romney also won a recent Iowa straw poll. McCain, Thompson and Giuliani did not speak at that Iowa event.
